Best Headless CMS 2025 — An Introduction

The following represents a list of those Headless CMS we encounter the most. We are not applying any scientific rigour around this selection — it goes back to a core point in this blog, all of the various “best of” listicles are heavily biased. At least we are being upfront about it (see below).

To that end, we have to start with Contento.

  1. Contento — the only headless CMS 100% focused on websites. This means the focus is on built-in features including SEO, asset management, and content models.

It is the only Headless CMS focused 100% on websites. What this means is they have taken a position as to the use case and by doing so they can include specific features the others lack (as they are all promoting the benefits of being head agnostic/ omnichannel).

2. Contentful — the market leader and synonymous with enterprise clients. Just watch the price ratchets between tiers. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

3. Sanity — very popular CMS (especially amongst developers) and often listed as a category leader on the likes of G2.

4. Storyblok — again a popular Headless CMS that tends to be viewed as a credible alternative to Contentful.

5. Prismic — known for more reasonable pricing, and a more modest feature set (which is great in many contexts).

6. Strapi — a fully managed, composable, and collaborative content platform (Strapi Cloud)

7. Payload — Payload is an open-source, headless CMS and application framework built with TypeScript, Node.js, and React.

8. Contentstack — Contentstack is a headless, API-first content management.

9. Headless WordPress — the term used to describe a decoupled WordPress. The ‘jury is still out’. The marketing team is comfortable working with an interface they are familiar with but I am not sure performance or security concerns are addressed satisfactorily.

10. Directus — Directus is a headless CMS that instantly turns your SQL database into REST and GraphQL.

Summary

This article has attempted to illustrate these ‘best of lists’ lack rigor and thus need to be taken with a grain of salt. Reviewing 10 different Headless CMS is a significant task, and thus most lists are quickly crafted using some arbitrary heuristics. This is no different.

We offer some ideas as to how to shortlist below (see Appendix 1), and recommend you always leave space for a ‘wild card’ — a newer entrant like Contento that focuses on a narrower set of requirements.

As we’ll outline in a subsequent blog the primary aim of this blog was to illustrate ways to appear in the top of Google rankings for a high intent commercial keyword. Afterall, the author represents one of the leading Headless CMS solutions on the list — Contento. So please take the list with a grain of salt (-;

So how can you distill the best Headless CMS down?

In some ways, it is a pretty challenging task.

You’ve probably exhausted a lot of energy winning the traditional (monolithic) v modern (Headless) CMS battle and now you have to go again?

Firstly — a lot will depend on your role. Technology leaders and marketing leaders will likely have very different views as to what best looks like.

  1. You could go for one of the market leaders — but if you do that needs to come with a health warning as claims and evidence of ‘price gouging’ are rampant (especially on reddit forums).

2. You could defer to the agency you are partnering with and let them recommend a preferred partner.

3. You could refer to the Jamstack listing for Headless CMS

G2 and Capterra reviews can also help you shortlist your chosen criteria.

Finally, you can assess if any of the newer entrants like Contento, offer some unique characteristics that appeal.
